Phonology And The Dutch Stress :: essays research papers

The Dutch stress sytem Dutch is described as being a quantity-sensitive trochaic system, operating from left to right with extrametricality. In the following essay I will gice the arguments and data that point towards this system. I will also analyse in which way exceptions are being taken care of within this system. The metrical analysis will be based on work by Trommelen & Zonneveld. These authors adopt an onset-rhyme organisation of syllable structure. We can make three major generalisations about stress when analysing Dutch: Firstly, main stress always falls within a three-syllable-window at the right word edge: this indicates that the main stress always falls on one of the last three syllables. This can also be called the three-syllable restriction. This produces three different stress patterns: final, penultimate and antepenultimate. Primary stress is prohibited further to the left. The three-syllable-window restriction: …()# Data:  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  ANT  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  PEN  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  FIN VV#  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Amà ©rika  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  macarà ³ni  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  individà º VC#  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Jerà ºzalem  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  catamà ¡ran  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  kameleà ³n Furthermore, stress is restricted to a two-syllable windowin words containing a prefinal (or diphtongal) syllable. This means that antepenultimate stress (third syllable from right side of the word) only occurs in words with an open syllable next to it (an open penultimate syllable). Therefore, the Dutch stress system depends on the character of the second to last (penultimate) syllable. Data:  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  ANT  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  PEN  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  FIN -VV-VV  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Pà ¡nama  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  pyjà ¡ma  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  chocolà ¡Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   -VV-VC  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  bà ¡riton  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  cà ©lebes  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  pelotà ³n  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   -VC-VV  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  agà ©nda  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  frikandà ©au -VC-VC  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Gibrà ¡ltar  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  bombardà ³n -ViVj-VV  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  andà jvie  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Thirdly, schwa syllables ae never stressed: Data:  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  a) –CVX-C@(C)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  b) -CVV-@(C ) mà ³de, salà ¡de, mir  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ãƒ ¡kel,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Azià «, Bà ©lgià «, tà ©rrià «r, là ©nte, septà ©mber  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ãƒ ndià «   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This is called the schwa-syllable restriction. Primary stress falls directly for a schwa syllable if schwa is immediately preceded by a consonant. We can, however also make minor generalisations within the bounds of major generalisations. These minor generalisations reflect the predominant stress patterns, and allow for exceptions. These exceptions stand for the recessive stress patterns within the system. The position of main stress is conditioned both by the length of the word and by the internal structure of the syllables involved. The dominant patterns in Dutch are the following:  In disyllabic words ending in open (VV) and closed (VC) syllables, penultimate stress is dominant  In trisyllabics, the dominant patterns are penultimate stress in VV-final words and antepenultimate stress in VC-final words (if the penultimate syllable is open)  In VXC-final words, final stress is the dominant pattern. Now that we know about these generalisations we can provide arguments and data which point towards the system of Dutch stress. Extrametricality: Extrametricality in the Dutch language is normally operating on words having a final –VX syllable (which is heavy). However, it does not work on final ‘open’ VV-syllables (which are light). The following examples prove this:

You are My Life :: Love Letters Dating Email Relationships

Dear Julie, It's fair to say that the past couple of weeks have been somber and gloomy for me. I have been living in the dark, as though a big black cloud has engulfed me. I have felt like there has been something missing from my heart, and although I wasn't sure what it was, I now realize it was the part I gave to you. Julie, you have been the missing part of my heart! Now, slowly, it's as though that piece is being put back into place and I'm starting to see a glimmer of light, just as though someone, somewhere has turned on a light and it's starting to flicker alive. It's hard for me to explain what this feeling is, all I can say is that when I've been with you lately, the movie I'm watching seems better, the music I'm listening to sounds more alive, even things like doing the dishes is more fun when you're with me. Everything I've ever done in my life has been better, brighter, and more exciting when I've been able to share it with you. I want you to know that the most important thing in my life is you. Nothing compares to holding you in my arms. I would never want you to not know the way I feel about you. I love you and I'm sure you must realize that, but for me, that is no longer enough now. I want you to really know how much I love you. I so dearly need the comfort and the security of knowing that whenever I say, I love you, you're going to say the same words. I wish that sometimes you would say them before I do and make me believe you mean them so much. I've feel so lucky that you've decided to share your life with me, and there's nothing, I wouldn't do to make you happy. I want you to want me. Just like I want you. There's no price you can put on love. I know you can't make love come back to the way it was: I know it'll come back, if, and when it's ready. I just want you to know that for every ounce of love you give to me, I will give it back to you a thousand times more. I worship and adore you and no one could ever compete with the beauty I see when you stand before me.

chocolate war :: essays research papers

2.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier is a book about a boy named Jerry whose Mother died and who is living with his father. Ever since his mother’s death, Jerry hasn’t been the same; him and his Father hardly talk. Everything is going great for Jerry at Trinity his school. He made the football team the guys admired him and this girl from the bus stop smiled him. Everything was going well until the chocolate sales came. When he was assigned an assignment from the Vigils, a group of popular boys in the school, he did as they followed which was to refuse to sell chocolates, even though it was voluntarily to sell chocolates nobody ever refused. After 10 days when the assignment was over for some reason Jerry still refused to sell chocolates. That was when hell broke loose and the chocolate war was begun. 3.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The best part of the book The Chocolate War is the part when Jerry and Emile had fight. It was one of the big climaxes of this book. It had you on the edge wanting more. The whole book you wonder if something similar to this part would happen and then finally it does. There was a lot of action and detail which was good so it seemed as if you were there watching the fight. When I read this part a lot of emotions gathered up inside of me. I was angry about how the crowd was reacting and then I became happy because of the few shots that Jerry shot at Emile but then again I was upset that Emile beat Jerry up so bad that he fell unconscious in to a pool of his own blood. The worst part of this book was when Jerry called up the girl from his bus stop. I felt sad for him because she smiled at him everyday and then he went in the phone book to look for her and he found it and then he called and she didn’t even know who he was and she thought that he was some kind of sick pervert calling her.

â€Å"Where†¦ are we?† Rachel managed, the simple act of trying to speak bringing on a crashing headache. The man massaging her replied, â€Å"You're on the medical deck of a Los Angeles class-â€Å" â€Å"On deck!† someone called out. Rachel sensed a sudden commotion all around her, and she tried to sit up. One of the men in blue helped, propping her up, and pulling the blankets up around her. Rachel rubbed her eyes and saw someone striding into the room. The newcomer was a powerful African-American man. Handsome and authoritative. His uniform was khaki. â€Å"At ease,† he declared, moving toward Rachel, stopping over her and gazing down at her with strong black eyes. â€Å"Harold Brown,† he said, his voice deep and commanding. â€Å"Captain of the U.S.S. Charlotte. And you are?† U.S.S. Charlotte, Rachel thought. The name seemed vaguely familiar. â€Å"Sexton†¦,† she replied. â€Å"I'm Rachel Sexton.† The man looked puzzled. He stepped closer, studying her more carefully. â€Å"I'll be damned. So you are.† Rachel felt lost. He knows me? Rachel was certain she did not recognize the man, although as her eyes dropped from his face to the patch on his chest, she saw the familiar emblem of an eagle clutching an anchor surrounded by the words U.S. NAVY. It now registered why she knew the name Charlotte. â€Å"Welcome aboard, Ms. Sexton,† the captain said. â€Å"You've gisted a number of this ship's recon reports. I know who you are.† â€Å"But what are you doing in these waters?† she stammered. His face hardened somewhat. â€Å"Frankly, Ms. Sexton, I was about to ask you the same question.† Tolland sat up slowly now, opening his mouth to speak. Rachel silenced him with a firm shake of her head. Not here. Not now. She had no doubt the first thing Tolland and Corky would want to talk about was the meteorite and the attack, but this was certainly not a topic to discuss in front of a Navy submarine crew. In the world of intelligence, regardless of crisis, CLEARANCE remained king; the meteorite situation remained highly classified. â€Å"I need to speak to NRO director William Pickering,† she told the captain. â€Å"In private, and immediately.† The captain arched his eyebrows, apparently unaccustomed to taking orders on his own ship. â€Å"I have classified information I need to share.† The captain studied her a long moment. â€Å"Let's get your body temperature back, and then I'll put you in contact with the NRO director.† â€Å"It's urgent, sir. I-† Rachel stopped short. Her eyes had just seen a clock on the wall over the pharmaceutical closet. 19:51 HOURS. Rachel blinked, staring. â€Å"Is†¦ is that clock right?† â€Å"You're on a navy vessel, ma'am. Our clocks are accurate.† â€Å"And is that†¦ Eastern time?† â€Å"7:51 P.M. Eastern Standard. We're out of Norfolk.† My God! she thought, stunned. It's only 7:51 P.M.? Rachel had the impression hours had passed since she passed out. It was not even past eight o'clock? The President has not yet gone public about the meteorite! I still have time to stop him! She immediately slid down off the bed, wrapping the blanket around her. Her legs felt shaky. â€Å"I need to speak to the President right away.† The captain looked confused. â€Å"The president of what?† â€Å"Of the United States!† â€Å"I thought you wanted William Pickering.† â€Å"I don't have time. I need the President.† The captain did not move, his huge frame blocking her way. â€Å"My understanding is that the President is about to give a very important live press conference. I doubt he's taking personal phone calls.† Rachel stood as straight as she could on her wobbly legs and fixed her eyes on the captain. â€Å"Sir, you do not have the clearance for me to explain the situation, but the President is about to make a terrible mistake. I have information he desperately needs to hear. Now. You need to trust me.† The captain stared at her a long moment. Frowning, he checked the clock again. â€Å"Nine minutes? I can't get you a secure connection to the White House in that short a time. All I could offer is a radiophone. Unsecured. And we'd have to go to antenna depth, which will take a few-â€Å" â€Å"Do it! Now!† 67 The White House telephone switchboard was located on the lower level of the East Wing. Three switchboard operators were always on duty. At the moment, only two were seated at the controls. The third operator was at a full sprint toward the Briefing Room. In her hand, she carried a cordless phone. She'd tried to patch the call through to the Oval Office, but the President was already en route to the press conference. She'd tried to call his aides on their cellulars, but before televised briefings, all cellular phones in and around the Briefing Room were turned off so as not to interrupt the proceedings. Running a cordless phone directly to the President at a time like this seemed questionable at best, and yet when the White House's NRO liaison called claiming she had emergency information that the President must get before going live, the operator had little doubt she needed to jump. The question now was whether she would get there in time. In a small medical office onboard the U.S.S. Charlotte, Rachel Sexton clutched a phone receiver to her ear and waited to talk to the President. Tolland and Corky sat nearby, still looking shaken. Corky had five stitches and a deep bruise on his cheekbone. All three of them had been helped into Thinsulate thermal underwear, heavy navy flight suits, oversized wool socks, and deck boots. With a hot cup of stale coffee in her hand, Rachel was starting to feel almost human again. â€Å"What's the holdup?† Tolland pressed. â€Å"It's seven fifty-six!† Rachel could not imagine. She had successfully reached one of the White House operators, explained who she was and that this was an emergency. The operator seemed sympathetic, had placed Rachel on hold, and was now, supposedly, making it her top priority to patch Rachel through to the President. Four minutes, Rachel thought. Hurry up! Closing her eyes, Rachel tried to gather her thoughts. It had been one hell of a day. I'm on a nuclear submarine, she said to herself, knowing she was damned lucky to be anywhere at all. According to the submarine captain, the Charlotte had been on a routine patrol in the Bering Sea two days ago and had picked up anomalous underwater sounds coming from the Milne Ice Shelf-drilling, jet noise, lots of encrypted radio traffic. They had been redirected and told to lie quietly and listen. An hour or so ago, they'd heard an explosion in the ice shelf and moved in to check it out. That was when they heard Rachel's SOS call. â€Å"Three minutes left!† Tolland sounded anxious now as he monitored the clock. Rachel was definitely getting nervous now. What was taking so long? Why hadn't the President taken her call? If Zach Herney went public with the data as it stood- Rachel forced the thought from her mind and shook the receiver. Pick up! As the White House operator dashed toward the stage entrance of the Briefing Room, she was met with a gathering throng of staff members. Everyone here was talking excitedly, making final preparations. She could see the President twenty yards away waiting at the entrance. The makeup people were still primping. â€Å"Coming through!† the operator said, trying to get through the crowd. â€Å"Call for the President. Excuse me. Coming through!† â€Å"Live in two minutes!† a media coordinator called out. Clutching the phone, the operator shoved her way toward the President. â€Å"Call for the President!† she panted. â€Å"Coming through!† A towering roadblock stepped into her path. Marjorie Tench. The senior adviser's long face grimaced down in disapproval. â€Å"What's going on?†

Good Versus Evil Essay

heartfelt versus Evil At first, it appears that the definitions of hot and wretched are straightforward. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, levelheaded is delimitate as that which is virtuously right righteousness diabolical is defined as profoundly immoral and malevolent. For centuries thither has been an argument among many philosophers on the principle of straightforward versus immorality and whether it rightfully exists. about advocate that human beings are the perpetrators of evil. Others argue that the field is non a unfavorable place and that evil and suffering is, in fact, necessary.Throughout the novel, Frankenstein by bloody shame Shelley, there is a clear splutter involving approximate and evil. The reviewer is introduced to the protagonist and storyteller, passkey Frankenstein, at the beginning of the novel. Victor, a family oriented man, becomes real interested in the modern science cosmea and later on roll in the hays that he has dis covered the secret of life. With this disco truly he goes on to create a junky, who system without a name by means ofout the alone novel. At first glance it appears that the junky did everything in his power to pr levelt Victor from having the happy life that he longed for. bloody shame Shelley figurely chose Victor Frankenstein to be the narrator of this story. Readers only get the story from his put of view. Frankenstein plays on the emotions of the commentators, therefore anything he is impressioning, readers feel the same way. He is seen as this helpless man who has been through so a profound deal in such a piffling life, and altogether because he was being terrorized by this heinous creature.I entered the room where the system lay, and was led up to the coffin The trial, the nominal head of the magistrate and witnesses, passed like a dream from my memory, when I saw the lifeless form of hydrogen Clerval stretched before me. I gasped for breath and, throwing my self on the body I exclaimed, Have my homicidal machinations deprived you also, my dearest Henry, of life? dickens I have already undone other victims await their destiny that you, Clerval, my friend, my benefactor (122). However, readers do get a glimpse in to how the monster feels and the struggles that he comes across. She continued her course along the high sides of the river, when suddenly her foot slipped and she fell into the speedy stream. I rushed from my hiding place, and, with complete labour from the force of the current, saved her, and dragged her to border I was suddenly interrupted by the approach of a rustic On seeing me, he darted towards me, and, tearing the missy from my arms, hastened towards the deeper parts of the wood he aimed a gun, which he carried, at my body, and fired. I drop to the ground, and my injurer, with increased swiftness, escaped into the wood (95).Mary Shelleys anecdote of a struggle among good versus evil makes the reader constantly r edefine who is truly the good one, and who is evil. At the end of the novel, the reader discovers that it is au thereforetic totallyy Victor Frankenstein that is the evil one. He manipulated the readers thoughts and feelings by leading them to turn over that he was the good one, that he was being tormented by this evil beast. In reality, this is how the story sincerely goes Frankenstein was the creator of this beast. Frankenstein abandoned the beast and enured it as if it were too wretched to be loved.Frankenstein, knowing how the beast felt and what he was capable of, continued to ignore the monsters requests for a companion. Frankenstein knew that the beast would polish off away all of his loved ones until he got what he wanted. Victor manipulated this monster in to doing his dirty work for him. Mary Shelley displays this strife between good and evil very well. Candide, written by Voltaire, is a jeering which pokes fun at a keep down of Enlightenment philosophies. The pro tagonist, Candide, is a good-hearted nevertheless naive young man.His mentor, Pangloss, is described as a teacher of metaphysico-theologo-cosmolonigology who believes that this is the surmount of all possible worlds. This belief, which is argued by Leibniz, is the main effort why Voltaire is satirizing his play. Pangloss is an optimist, and believes that no matter what happens, this is the greatest life anyone can live because the good will continuously be the case. Voltaire mocks the fancy that good prevails over evil because he believes that human beings perpetrate evil. He believes that evil does, in fact, exist and ignoring that existence is hurt and dangerous.Other philosophers such as Leibniz believe that the existence of any evil in the world would have to mean that matinee idol is either not good or not omnipotent, and that liking could not mayhap be true. With this reasoning, philosophers such as Leibniz believe that since God is indeed faultless, then the world t hat he has created can be viewed as no less than perfect as well. All the evil or big(p) that people claim exists in the world is only because they do not visualise what Gods ultimate intend is. Voltaire strongly disagrees with this idea, as it is evident in his novel. He does not accept the idea that a perfect God exists, perhaps a God does not even exist. To prove his point, Voltaire uses a great deal of exaggeration the biggest optimists in the world, Candide and Pangloss, go through a series of hardships and horrors. These woes do not serve any apparent purpose but to attack this belief that this is the best of all possible worlds. A perfect example is when Pangloss tells Candide that he is dying because of syphilis. In chapter four, Candide cries, O sage Pangloss what a unknown genealogy is thisIs not the devil the infrastructure of it? Pangloss simply replies, Not at all, it was a thing unavoidable, a necessary component in the best of worlds for if Columbus had not ca ught in an island in America this disease, which contaminates the fount of generation, and frequently impedes propagation itself, and is evidently contrasted to the great end of nature, we should have uncomplete chocolate nor cochineal. This part of the novel makes the reader laugh because chocolate is not the government issue of syphilis they are in, no way, related.Voltaire then adds much intelligent and rational characters into the story, such as the old woman, who have more pessimistic views about how the world works. By the end of the novel, Pangloss finally admits that maybe this is not the best of all possible worlds. Shelley, Voltaire, and Leibniz all touched on the subject of good versus evil. Voltaire and Leibniz had opposing views on how the world really works. Maybe there is a bigger plan, but evil does exist and evil is created by all of us. Shelley definitely showed how manhood can truly be evil. No matter what, there will always be a battle between good versus evil.
